Leadership, Growth, Promotion and Pathways for all Pickleball players throughout Aotearoa New Zealand

Become a Pickleball Referee - everything you need to know.

If you are passionate about Pickleball and want to play a bigger role in the sport, becoming a trained referee is a fantastic way to give back, develop your knowledge, and be part of high-quality competition across the country.

Why Become a Referee?

Referees are essential to the growth and professionalism of Pickleball.  They ensure matches are played fairly, confidently manage on-court situations, and help deliver a great experience for players and spectators alike.  Whether you are volunteering at your local club or aiming to officiate at national events, referee training opens the door to new opportunities within the sport.

Your Referee Pathway

1. Start with Level 1 Referee Training - The first step is completing a Level 1 Referee Course, designed for those new to officiating.  PNZA regularly delivers Level 1 courses, often aligned with major tournaments such as the NZ Open.  You will:

  • Learn the rules of Pickleball and how to apply them in real match situations
  • Understand basic referee positioning, scoring, and match control
  • Build confidence to officiate at club and entry-level tournaments

2. Progress to Level 2 Referee Training - Once you have gained experience, you can take the next step with Level 2 Referee Training.  This course is ideal for referees looking to take on greater responsibility and contribute to the development of the sport nationwide.  You will:

  • Deepen your technical knowledge and decision-making
  • Learn to manage more complex match scenarios
  • Prepare to officiate at higher-level and national events

3. Get Involved and Build Experience - After completing your training, practical experience is key to becoming a confident and capable official.  You can:

  • Volunteer or referee at local club events and tournaments
  • Continue learning through real match experience
  • Connect with the referee community and mentors

4. Maintain Your Accreditation - To ensure referees stay up to date with the latest rules and best practice, there is an annual requirement to complete a theory assessment.

  • Referees are expected to sit the theory test each year, ideally in February, following the annual release of updated rules
  • This helps maintain consistency and confidence in officiating across all levels of the game
  • It ensures all referees are aligned with current interpretations and rule changes

5. Stay Connected with PNZA - Referee development is part of the broader Pickleball pathway in New Zealand.  PNZA members benefit from access to referee training and development resources as part of their involvement in the sport through:

  • Access training and development opportunities through membership
  • Stay updated on upcoming courses and events
  • Contribute to the continued growth of Pickleball across the country

Take the Next Step - If you are ready to elevate your involvement in Pickleball, becoming a trained referee is a rewarding and impactful pathway.  Keep an eye out for upcoming courses, register early, and take your place courtside, helping deliver fair, fun, and competitive Pickleball across Aotearoa New Zealand.  Contact us to find a course near you: info@pnza.org.nz
